Assisted living communities provide healthcare, supervision, and recreational activities to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities commonly provide care supervision, outings for leisurely activity, and help with transit and appointments. In select instances, communities may offer skilled nursing care, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. Ohio maintains specific rules associated with this type of community. Ohio Department of Health licenses this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as psychological history, psychical history, medical diagnoses, and health history. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medication, supervision, activities, and intermittent nursing services. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include verifying labels, assistance organizing medication, and observation. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include job responsibilities, residents rights, community procedures, and securing emergency assistance.
