Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer oversight, care, and social opportunities to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities often offer aid with daily activities, opportunities for organized activity, and help with transportation and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, respite, or continuing care. Nebraska has a number of provisions related to this type of community. Nebraska Division of Public Health, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Licensure and Regulation licenses this community type. Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: rules/regulations/standards for operating an ALF, administration, social services, and financial management. Public assistance is available through Government assistance is covered through two Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs.. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as services for residents with special needs and services provided by the community: how often, when and by who. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include monitor for nutritional problems on specified weight changes, must offer written menus based on federal nutrition standards, and provide adequate food services. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, case management, financial management, and assistance with personal care. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents.
