Assisted living communities offer oversight, care, and recreational activities to individuals around 65 years of age or older. The services offered often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, continuing care, or dementia care. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . The state of Michigan has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses supervises this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, and medication management. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, and three daily meals and snacks must be provided. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, medication supervision and administration, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, and The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include administration of medication, staff training program based on the home’s program statement, safety and fire prevention, and residents rights and responsibilities.
