An assisted living facility is a residential community which provides support, aid, and supervision to medically stable persons who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living facilities frequently offer outings for organized activity, help with the activities of daily life, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, facilities may offer respite, nursing, or hospice. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living facility is around $51,600 . Maryland has specific standards associated with this kind of facility. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene certifies this type of facility. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff who have passed a Board of nursing program may administer medications, a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission, and residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, problematic behaviors, activities of daily living needs, and risk factor management needs. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be varied, meals must be well-balanced, programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, and meals must be palatable. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of areas. These areas include basic food safety, the resident assessment process, residents’ rights, and including standard precautions. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, and uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others.
