Assisted living communities offer a sense of community as well as personalized support. Assisted living communities often provide supervision of care, help with transit and appointments, and assistance with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, respite, or dementia care. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene licenses this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff who have passed a Board of nursing program may administer medications, medication administration, and a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be well-balanced, programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, and meals must be palatable. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, activities of daily living needs, ability to self-administer medication, and assessed on psychiatric conditions. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, and uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff members receive training in a number of areas. These include: health and psychosocial needs, state-approved, 5-hour training on cognitive impairment and mental illness, the resident assessment process, and emergency disaster plans.
