Assisted living communities offer personal care, oversight, and social interaction to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities often offer aid with daily activities, chances for social activity, and supervision of care. In certain instances, communities may offer respite, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene governs this community type. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include physical assistance to open and remove medications from a container, reminders to take medications, and a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, assistance with self-administration of medications, and monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support. Staff must receive training in a number of areas. These areas include the resident assessment process, including standard precautions, state-approved, 5-hour training on cognitive impairment and mental illness, and fire and life safety. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, meals must be varied, meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, and meals must be well-balanced. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as activities of daily living needs, treatment requirements, problematic behaviors, and assessed on psychiatric conditions.
