Assisted living communities offer care, social opportunities, and supervision to persons around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities commonly provide assistance with transit and appointments, aid with daily activities, and outings for social activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, respite, or nursing. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene supervises this type of community. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include health and psychosocial needs, the resident assessment process, basic food safety, and the use of service plans. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, assistance with self-administration of medications, supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, and assistance in accessing and coordinating health services. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, meals must be varied, programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, and meals must be properly prepared. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall, a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission, and reminders to take medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as risk factor management needs, evaluation by a health care practitioner is required and changes must be made to the resident’s service plan if there is an assessment score change in any way, ability to self-administer medication, and assessed on psychiatric conditions.
