An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers aid, support, and supervision to independent persons who do not require skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities frequently provide chances for leisurely activity, help with transportation and appointments, and aid with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, nursing care, or “aging in place”. In Louisiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $43,800 . Louisiana has specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Department of Health and Hospitals, Health Standards Section certifies this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include health related services that accommodate individual resident’s changing needs and preferences, activities, health-related services that are designed to allow the individual to reside in the least restrictive setting of his/her choice, and 24 hour supervision and assistance. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration, resident may be reminded to take his/her medication, and the dosage may be checked according to the container label. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three meals a day, communities must make reasonable accommodations to meet dietary requirements and religious and ethnic preferences, communities must make reasonable accommodations to make snacks, fruit, and beverages available when requested, and menus must be reviewed and approved by a nutritionist or dietician to ensure nutritional appropriateness. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. menus must be planned or approved by a registered licensed dietician if the resident has a medically prescribed diet The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. Staff members receive training in a variety of areas. These areas include any specialized training to meet resident needs, geriatrics, adult first-aid, and emergency and evacuation procedures. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as pre-admission appraisal, The service plan must include the scope of services that will be provided to meet the resident’s needs, assessment of the resident’s needs and preferences, and service plan must be revised when a resident’s condition or preferences change.
