An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers aid, supervision, and support to self-sufficient persons who do not need skilled nursing support. The types of service provided often involve aid with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some instances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or skilled nursing care. In Kansas, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $53,670 . Kansas has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Secretary of Aging and Disability Services regulates this community type. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 6. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medications may be administered by community staff, self-administer medications, and medication regimens are reviewed each time the resident experiences a significant change in condition. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Home and Community-Based Services waivers,. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met.
