Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment-style housing and social interaction as well as individualized help. Services offered often include support with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer skilled nursing care, dementia care, or respite. In Indiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 49,200. Indiana has specific regulations related to this kind of community. Indiana State Department of Health supervises this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include resident must be observed for effects of medications and undesirable effects must be documented and the resident’s physician notified, distribution of prescribed medications, and preparation of prescribed medications. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include confidentiality requirements, fire and disaster preparedness, records, and 40 hours of continuing education every 2 years. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met.
