Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and health care for people who need help with everyday activities such as meal preparation or self-administering medication. Assisted living communities usually offer help with transportation and appointments, aid with the activities of daily life, and outings for recreational activity. In select situations, communities may provide Alzheimer's care, respite, or hospice. In Indiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 49,200. The state of Indiana maintains specific rules associated with this type of community. Indiana State Department of Health certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include scheduled transportation for community-based activities, activities and programs appropriate to residents' abilities and interests, a nursing diagnosis, and identifying responses to actual or potential health conditions. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must consider residents' reasonable religious preferences, communities must provide three meals a day, communities must consider residents' ethnic preferences, and communities must meet daily dietary requirements and requests. Public assistance is available through Medicaid A&D and TBI 1915(c) Waiver program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include resident must be observed for effects of medications and undesirable effects must be documented and the resident's physician notified, Medications may be administered under physician's order by licensed nursing personnel or qualified medication aides, and distribution of prescribed medications. communities must consider residents' personal preference meals may temporarily be delivered to the resident's room Staff are required to receive education in a number of fields.
