An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers support, care, and supervision to independent persons who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The services provided often include aid with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, skilled nursing care, or respite. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this type of community. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These areas include reporting, disaster procedures, self-determination, and abuse. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include non-medical services, laundry, assistance with activities of daily living, and medication reminders. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, reading the medication label to residents, and supervision of self-administered medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.
