Assisted living communities administer social events, care, and oversight to individuals who are on average 65 years old. Assisted living communities frequently provide chances for leisurely activity, care supervision, and help with transit and appointments. In select situations, communities may provide hospice, “aging in place”, or respite. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this community type. Staff must receive training in a variety of fields. These include: job responsibilities and limitations, promotion of dignity, privacy, and residents’ need and service plans. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include emergency response systems, non-medical services, laundry, and assistance with activities of daily living. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, medication reminders, and reading the medication label to residents.
