Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and health care for people who require support with everyday activities such as dressing or showering. Services offered often include aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or nursing. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include laundry, assistance with activities of daily living, emergency response systems, and supervision of self-administered medications. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include choice, job responsibilities and limitations, residents’ need and service plans, and philosophy and goals. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the medication label to residents, medication reminders, and medication administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, and provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety.
