Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides support, care, and aid to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The services offered often include support with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, nursing, or hospice. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation supervises this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , nursing services, personal care services, and assistance with self-administration of medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination report, communities must document such assessment, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, licensed nursing staff may administer medications, and unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration. Staff must receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living, resident behavior and needs, reporting incidents, and community emergency procedures. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, and meals must be adapted to residents preferences.
