Assisted Living in St. Augustine, FL

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living communities offer lodging and services to seniors who want some assistance with daily tasks like taking medicines, making meals and keeping up with housework. Assisted living communities come in all sizes and shapes, so visiting them may be the most effective way to figure out which one is best for you personally or your loved one.

What Services Are Offered in Assisted Living?

No-one assisted living community is similar to another. At a minimum, assisted living gives independently minded seniors meals and snack foods, assist with things like washing and dressing, and a wide variety of activities such as for example health and wellness programs, cultural events, outings plus much more, all in a safe and secure environment among people their age.

If you are exploring assisted living, you ve probably run into the acronym ADLs, which stands for the Activities of Daily Living. These consist of:

  • Bathing and showering
  • Toileting
  • Dressing
  • Feeding (however, not meal planning)
  • Continence
  • Functional mobility, which includes getting in and out of a bed or chair

Developed in the 1950s, ADLs evaluate an individual s overall health and function. In general, elderly adults who can take care of ADLs by themselves but who are considering a switch to senior living may be better prospects for independent living. Should you have questions in what care type is the best fit for your loved one, call A Place for Mom. Our Senior Living Advisors can answer any questions you may have about assisted living, independent living, memory care, life plan communities and more.

Assisted Living Vs. Nursing Homes

The word ‘‚¬Assisted Living was initially used in the 1980s to spell it out a new sort of residential living for old adults that was obviously not the same as more traditional nursing home models. Assisted living is made for people who need a certain amount of assistance with daily activities but who still would like level of autonomy and who want to reside in an apartment-like setting like a studio or a one-bedroom apartment. A large number of assisted living communities provide a complete calendar of activities and events and offer multiple meal choices to provide for many different tastes and needs, including special diets and restaurant-style options. Small pets are often permitted.

In comparison, the sign of nursing homes is that they offer skilled nursing care. They are created to meet the needs of seniors and other people who have medical conditions that require 24×7 medical attention. Meals are generally served in a central dining hall and residents live in individual or shared bedrooms. Some nursing homes also offer short-term therapeutic care. Nursing homes today are also called convalescent care centers, nursing centers, skilled nursing communities and long-term care communities. Because they provide more support, nursing homes are more costly than assisted living communities.

Both skilled nursing and assisted living communities may provide memory care, which is specific support for individuals dealing with cognitive impairment. In fact, 40% of the people who reside in the state of FL are currently living with some type of Alzheimer’s, according to the National Center for Assisted Living. Generally, people living with the initial stages of Alzheimer s or dementia are effectively served by assisted living communities while people living with later levels of dementia require the health care of a nursing home.

What Is Assisted Living Like?

Whilst every community is normally unique, here are some characteristics that many assisted living communities share:

  • They provide different levels of care and attention, occasionally at varied costs.
  • They provide different living options, from studios to one-bedroom apartments.
  • Many permit people to bring their personal pets, including birds, cats and in some cases little dogs.
  • They cater to different backgrounds, cultures and hobbies. Some communities, for example, are faith-based, while some are multilingual, with activities and dining choices to match. Still more are made for retired armed service or university alumni and sometimes are even situated on or near college campuses.
  • They may offer accommodations for married couples along with individuals.
  • They range in proportions. Some communities have as few as 20 residents, while some many have significantly more than 200.

With so many options to choose from, finding the right community can seem overpowering. Our Senior Living Advisors will help. They reside in the communities they work in. When you talk to a Senior Living Advisor, he or she will ask a few questions to better understand what you are looking for, what your budget will be and what particular desires your family member may have. On top of that their guidance is free of charge!

When Is It Time to Consider Assisted Living?

If you’re asking this question, chances are good that it s time you find out more about senior living. Here are a few other indications that assisted living may be ideal for both your family member and your family:

  • You are concerned for your loved one s basic safety.
  • You are worried they aren’t eating correctly.
  • You worry about them going out of the home by themselves.
  • You notice they are spending much less time with family and friends.
  • You get a phone call or email from a friend who’s worried about them.
  • You discover that your family member may have difficulty remembering people s names or working with a familiar technology like their cellular phone or television remote control.

If these or additional indicators are worrying you, take action. Get in touch with A Place for Mom and talk to a Senior Living Advisor today. They can answer your questions and assist you to figure out next steps. On top of that, their knowledge is cost-free!

Assisted Living Inspections and Ratings

FL supplies families with exceptional access to its assisted living inspection and ratings information. Based on our state-by-state review of state records, FL s assisted living regulation and inspection program is one of the most transparent in the country. To find the records of an assisted living community in the wider St. Augustine area, visit the FloridaHealthFinder.gov site and search by service type to get inspection reviews, licensure data, penalties and actions assessed against the service, availability of nursing staff, an emergency power plan summary and more.

The state of FL requires that new assisted living residents have a medical exam within a month of move-in to assess an personalized care plan. The state also mandates the absolute minimum number of weekly employee hours based on the number of people who live in a facility to ensure care plans can be accommodated.

10 Things to Look For When Touring an Assisted Living Facility

The best way to figure out if an assisted living community is right for your loved one is to go to one — or better yet, four or five of them! Here are some factors to be aware of when you tour:

  1. Does the staff connect to the residents?
  2. Is the home clean, odor-free and well looked after?
  3. Is there a process in place for evaluating the needs of a new resident?
  4. Can residents arrange for transport if they need it?
  5. Are the personnel professional and polite?
  6. Are there particular visiting hours or are friends and family welcome anytime?
  7. Will each resident have a care plan set up?
  8. What happens if a resident s needs change?
  9. Is there an emergency strategy in place in the event of a natural or manmade disaster?
  10. Do the people who live there remind you of your loved one?

For more tips about the things to look for while visiting an assisted living community, see our Planning and Advice pages.

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost in St. Augustine, FL?

Ready to find out more? Visit our Senior Living Cost Index page to discover what price ranges are in your town.

How to Pay for Senior Living In St. Augustine, FL

How to pay for assisted living is among the most common questions families have if they meet with one of our Senior Living Advisors. Here are some of the most typical funding resources for senior living:

  • Personal income or savings. If a senior does not have a sufficient amount of funds saved to pay for long-term care, it s common for families to combine money to create up the difference.
  • Home equity. Often, seniors sell their places of residence to pay for senior living. In some instances, a bridge loan could be available to help cover the price of moving while the home is prepared for sale.
  • Long-term care insurance. This particular kind of insurance is designed to pay for senior care expenses. Some policies might cover various other expenses which can be incurred while in the transition to assisted living, such as acquiring a case manager or care coordinator.
  • Veterans benefits. Many seniors have served in the armed service and may qualify for support. Because benefits go untouched, it s worthwhile to check to discover if your loved one or his / her spouse may meet the requirements. Understanding Assisted Living Costs

Assisted living costs vary broadly from facility to facility, so that it pays to do your research. Below are a few points that can influence just how much you pay:

  • Type of residence
  • Size of apartment (studio, one- or two-bedroom house)
  • Types of providers needed
  • Geographical location
  • Located area of the facility
  • Level of opulence

Assisted living communities often charge a set fee that addresses many basic solutions, with extra charges added on for special services. Other communities will charge a service charge for each individual service, referred to as a la carte payment, so that residents only pay for the solutions they make use of. Typically, the monthly base fee includes only lease and meals, with care charged separately. Entrance costs and deposits are also frequently expected. Charges and prices vary by community, therefore it s necessary to question communities you are researching about their costs and services.
