Assisted Living in St Augustine, Florida

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living communities offer lodging and services to seniors who want some assistance with daily tasks like taking medicines, making meals and keeping up with housework. Assisted living communities come in all sizes and shapes, so visiting them may be the most effective way to figure out which one is best for you personally or your loved one.

What Services Are Offered in Assisted Living?

No-one assisted living community is similar to another. At a minimum, assisted living gives independently minded seniors meals and snack foods, assist with things like washing and dressing, and a wide variety of activities such as for example health and wellness programs, cultural events, outings plus much more, all in a safe and secure environment among people their age.

If you are exploring assisted living, you ve probably run into the acronym ADLs, which stands for the Activities of Daily Living. These consist of:

  • Bathing and showering
  • Toileting
  • Dressing
  • Feeding (however, not meal planning)
  • Continence
  • Functional mobility, which includes getting in and out of a bed or chair

Developed in the 1950s, ADLs evaluate an individual s overall health and function. In general, elderly adults who can take care of ADLs by themselves but who are considering a switch to senior living may be better prospects for independent living. Should you have questions in what care type is the best fit for your loved one, call A Place for Mom. Our Senior Living Advisors can answer any questions you may have about assisted living, independent living, memory care, life plan communities and more.

Assisted Living Vs. Nursing Homes

The word '‚¬Assisted Living was initially used in the 1980s to spell it out a new sort of residential living for old adults that was obviously not the same as more traditional nursing home models. Assisted living is made for people who need a certain amount of assistance with daily activities but who still would like level of autonomy and who want to reside in an apartment-like setting like a studio or a one-bedroom apartment. A large number of assisted living communities provide a complete calendar of activities and events and offer multiple meal choices to provide for many different tastes and needs, including special diets and restaurant-style options. Small pets are often permitted.

In comparison, the sign of nursing homes is that they offer skilled nursing care. They are created to meet the needs of seniors and other people who have medical conditions that require 24x7 medical attention. Meals are generally served in a central dining hall and residents live in individual or shared bedrooms. Some nursing homes also offer short-term therapeutic care. Nursing homes today are also called convalescent care centers, nursing centers, skilled nursing communities and long-term care communities. Because they provide more support, nursing homes are more costly than assisted living communities.

Both skilled nursing and assisted living communities may provide memory care, which is specific support for individuals dealing with cognitive impairment. In fact, 40% of the people who reside in the state of Florida are currently living with some type of Alzheimer's, according to the National Center for Assisted Living. Generally, people living with the initial stages of Alzheimer s or dementia are effectively served by assisted living communities while people living with later levels of dementia require the health care of a nursing home.

What Is Assisted Living Like?

Whilst every community is normally unique, here are some characteristics that many assisted living communities share:

  • They provide different levels of care and attention, occasionally at varied costs.
  • They provide different living options, from studios to one-bedroom apartments.
  • Many permit people to bring their personal pets, including birds, cats and in some cases little dogs.
  • They cater to different backgrounds, cultures and hobbies. Some communities, for example, are faith-based, while some are multilingual, with activities and dining choices to match. Still more are made for retired armed service or university alumni and sometimes are even situated on or near college campuses.
  • They may offer accommodations for married couples along with individuals.
  • They range in proportions. Some communities have as few as 20 residents, while some many have significantly more than 200.

  7. Will each resident have a care plan set up?
  8. What happens if a resident s needs change?
  9. Is there an emergency strategy in place in the event of a natural or manmade disaster?

  • Sale of a life insurance policy. There are several ways to use life insurance to invest in senior living determined by the type of policy you have. Consult with a life insurance or economic advisor to learn about whether this program might work for your situation.

Understanding Assisted Living Costs

Assisted living costs vary broadly from facility to facility, so that it pays to do your research. Below are a few points that can influence just how much you pay:

  • Type of residence
  • Size of apartment (studio, one- or two-bedroom house)
