The community is okay. The food is not as great, but I can understand for having to cook for so many. The community is a safe place for my loved one and the family can take them out at all times. The outside could have more attention such as cleaning up around the building to make things look neat and orderly.

Wonderful Facility for Mom

Mom has been a resident of Brookdale St. Augustine for 5 years now. Although she has slowly sucommed to old age, (she's 90 1/2), her CARE at Brookdale as ALWAYS BEEN WONDERFUL! The Nursing Staff keeps us informed of her status, and even though Mom can be Cantankerous a lot of the time, she is still treated with kindness and caring staff. They make sure she gets her shower and help her dress, as she has become very lax in that area. We could NOT be more pleased with our choice of Brookdale. A final salute to [name removed], on the front desk, who takes SUCH GOOD CARE of all the residents - she genuinely cares that they are well taken care of. AND to [name removed], the Executive Director who is always available and personable - both are outstanding representatives for the facility!

Staff is great!

This is the perfect place for our mom, not so fussy as to be intimidating but very adequate and well suited for her. The staff are all really caring and seem to understand that making residents comfortable and at ease is key to their satisfaction with living in a community.

An abrupt move from Brookdale

My mom is no longer there because she fell while there, and broke her femur in the same leg that she'd broken her hip the month before. The reason she isn't there is because the Florida guidelines for memory care require that you be able to stand on your own. Because of the break that happened there on their watch, she couldn't go back. I'm not sure I really think that's fair. I understand the law and they don't have a mechanical lift, so they can't lift you if you can't help. That's basically why she isn't there, but she was only there barely a month. I did also experience, while there, a large theft that they claimed to have investigated. I'm unsure if they did or not, but somebody stole right of my mothers ears, a [price removed] pair of earrings. I would want people to know that, it's not as trusting. You go into Brookdale of St. Augustine and you think it's beautiful, very well appointed, very well decorated and very nice. In fact, I'd say it's plush or posh, but the staff are not quite as dependable as the place gives you the impression. That happened within the first three days she was there, and I got a real sense of uneasiness. I felt she was being cared for. I liked that I requested and they allowed me to put a camera in my mothers room. I could watch it 24/7 if I wanted to, although I didn't. I typically watched during mealtimes and things like that, but I was pleased that they allowed me to do that. The supervisory staff - like the director, [name removed], marketing & sales people and the admissions director, they were very understanding and kind throughout the whole process, and as kind as they can be. They were all very very understanding and compassionate. It was just down to the nitty gritty of the CNAs' who actually worked with my mom, who weren't always the kindest. Overall, it was a good experience. It was a much shorter experience than I'd anticipated because I moved my mother in there with furniture and everything, and she only stayed less than a month, which was very discouraging. I had hope she'd be able to return after a stint in rehab, but she wasn't. She's now in a skilled nursing facility, and I was disappointed with A Place for Mom because they don't work with skilled nursing and I was kind of left on my own to figure out the next steps. I would, however, still recommend A Place for Mom to others.

Great Place

Everyone I met or passed in the hallway was happy and loved it there. Nothing was staged. I've been to many care centers and felt best about this one. [names removed] is a caring, genuine person who blew me away with her attitude, humor and compassion. I still hope my mother can live there, but right now she needs more of a hospital setting. BTW, my mother loved the place too.

Tour experience

Out of all of the places that we toured, this was probably our least favorite. It had nothing to to with the staff, they were all great and gave us wonderful information. For us it was the atmosphere, the paint color and the furnishings were all dark and I like bright and airy.

so far so good

Our family is having a much better experience we are happy with the improvements being made here that were not happening at our loved ones previous community. The staff are all very friendly, we do not get any attitude from anybody. We have spoken with the director and we know it is not her fault given the current struggles with staffing, but the house keeping is lacking some. Also the maintenance guys is all by himself during the day and with it being a bigger place it can take awhile for things to get done. The meals overall are pretty good and even though our loved one does not participate in the activities, they staff do their best to encourage.

A good experience for my sister despite issues

The staff members are good at this community, and they do a great job keeping the residents and guest safe during COVID. To our understanding and what we have experienced the care services are excellent. Our loved one has made a good adjustment going to the activities, and she used to actually sing. We would recommend this community to others.

A very nice place to live

The staff members at this community are very friendly, and they seem to offer quite a bit of activities. The food was pretty good when they were able to eat in the dining room, now because of COVID it is being delivered to their rooms. It is pretty generic food however it is decent, and the rooms at this community could use some updates.

He is happy so we are happy!

We know our loved one is very happy there, and from our understanding our loved says the cleanliness is good. The friendliness of the staff members is very good. The care services are good, but currently what they are lacking is having a bus service come and take them to the store and their doctors appointments. Our loved one does a bible study, so he is very happy with the activities.

A safe place

We chose Brookdale because they allowed my mom to have a cat in memory care. It was the first cat to ever be in their unit in the state of FL. The room sizes were good, they have their own bathroom in each room. My mom tells me the food is really good and she is a great cook, so it has to be good! My favorite part about Brookdale has been how my mother has made friends here. I would definitely recommend this community and I have.

Never put your loved one here.

Horrible services and dirty facility. The majority of the staff are subpar, miserable and unfriendly to residents. We are pulling our relative out after only 4 months Of living at this facility. We were charged for services we were not receiving , constant problems with the medical staff and a revolving door of staff including director of the facility. The building had a constant stench of urine and feces soaked diapers that residents sat in while they milled about in the common areas . Bags of dirty adult diapers sat in the residents hallway and the smell permeated the hallway and the resident’s rooms. Staff made excuses that they were too busy to deliver the services promised and paid for . We hate to move our loved one, but their entire demeanor deteriorated during their residence here, they were depressed and distant . This is our second facility in the last 7 years and we hate changing our loved ones residence but this place should lose their license to operate due to the level of service that is provided to the residents. Last director left after less than 3 months and shared with us the low level of employees she was working with and all of her resident’s room inspections failed due to the negligent level of care the RAs were providing to the residents and the example she shared were the residents were laying in their excrement for hours, and neglect of maintaining the cleanliness of the room. We have been more than patient with the facility and had hopes it would improve but it has not and doesn’t seem like there is hope for improvements. Employees shared with me that Brookdale pays so low for hourly rates that staff leave often and turnover rates at this location are high. Remaining staff is overwhelmed picking up the slack.
