Assisted Living

An assisted living facility is a residential community which administers care, support, and supervision to self-sufficient persons who do not need skilled nursing care. Assisted living facilities commonly offer aid with daily activities, help with appointments and transit, and care supervision. In select situations, facilities may provide hospice, continuing care, or dementia care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living facility is around 42,000. Florida maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of facility. The Bureau of Health Facility Regulation supervises this type of facility. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program.The minimum number of residents for this facility type is 1. This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include emergency evacuation, resident behavior and needs, resident rights, and facility emergency procedures. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , meals must be adapted to residents' food habits, the facility must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, and the facility must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident's health care provider for residents who require special diets. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination report, facilities must document such assessment, facility must document any substantial changes in a resident's status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized facility , and monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician . This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration, and opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medications, personal care services, and assistance with activities of daily living .
