Assisted living communities offer personal care, social opportunities, and oversight to people around 65 years old. Services provided often include aid with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, skilled nursing care, or “aging in place”. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida maintains specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation supervises this community type. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , communities must document such assessment, medical examination report, and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community . Staff members receive training in a variety of areas. These include: community emergency procedures, 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living, resident abuse, neglect, and and exploitation, and community sanitation procedures. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , and meals must be adapted to residents preferences. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the label, staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, and licensed nursing staff may administer medications. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medications, personal care services, and assistance with activities of daily living .
