An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides aid, care, and supervision to medically stable seniors who do not need skilled nursing care. The services offered often include help with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or respite. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation certifies this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, and meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the label, staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, and opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, assistance with activities of daily living , nursing services, and personal care services. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , communities must document such assessment, and medical examination report. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. Staff members receive education in a number of fields. These include: reporting incidents, infection control, universal precautions, and emergency evacuation.
