Assisted living communities provide coordinated social events and apartment style housing as well as personalized care. The services provided often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In select cases, communities may provide nursing care, dementia care, or respite. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California maintains specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division licenses this community type. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of areas. These include: psychosocial aspects of aging, resident supervision, Administrators must complete 40 hours of continuing education units every 2 years, and first-aid. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, and the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
