Assisted living communities offer supervision, healthcare, and social interaction to persons who are on average 65 years of age or older. The services provided often involve help with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. In select instances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, respite, or hospice. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division supervises this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, and communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of fields. These areas include recognizing signs and symptoms of dementia, the aging process, knowledge of community services and resources, and medication policies and procedures. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program.
