Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers care, supervision, and support to healthy individuals who do not require skilled nursing care. The services offered often include aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. In certain instances, communities may offer hospice, continuing care, or nursing. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division supervises this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, and the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. Staff must receive education in a number of areas. These areas include housekeeping and sanitation procedures, first-aid, knowledge of community services and resources, and how to recognize early signs of illness. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications.
