An assisted living community is a residential community which provides aid, supervision, and care to healthy seniors who do not need skilled nursing support. The types of service offered often involve support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. In some situations, communities may offer skilled nursing care, respite, or “aging in place”. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California maintains specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division governs this community type. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
