An assisted living community is a residential community which offers support, supervision, and care to independent persons who do not require skilled nursing support. The services offered often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In select cases, communities may offer continuing care, hospice, or skilled nursing care. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California has specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division licenses this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
