Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social events as well as individualized care. The types of service offered often include aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, dementia care, or respite. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications. Staff must obtain training in a number of areas. These areas include knowledge required to safely assist with prescribed medications, psychosocial aspects of aging, recognizing signs and symptoms of dementia, and knowledge of community services and resources. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, and communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks.
