Assisted living communities offer personal care, social events, and supervision to people who are on average 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities commonly provide care supervision, help with transportation and appointments, and help with daily activities. In some situations, communities may offer hospice, dementia care, or nursing care. In Alabama, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $39,000 . The state of Alabama has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. Department of Public Health, Bureau of Health Provider Standards certifies this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication services, housekeeping, social activities, and general observation and health supervision. Staff members receive training in a number of areas. These include: basic first-aid, applicable rules and statutes, 19 years of age, and signs and symptoms of dementia. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative and medical examination by a physician prior to admission. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Snacks and beverages must be available throughout the day and after the evening meal, meals must meet the Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, communities must serve daily at least three meals, and Alternate food selections must be available for residents on medically prescribed diets.
