Sliding downhill.

Loved one there and it has gone downhill terribly in last year! Providers are caring but extremely short staffed creating delays in long wait times when there is a need by a resident. Activities are good but cleanliness is issue. Not only is it old with rips in rugs, etc in the rooms but also, rooms are not cleaned well. Dirty behind toilets, doors, cabinets in rooms under sink have dirt/bugs. The level of assistance they provide for the cost is poor. They are not happy to help and prefer residence to do most everything themselves. We were told it was an age in place facility to a certain level but does not seem to be true as they don't like to provided the gradual assistance needed over time. Lastly, food is absolutely terrible!! Several unhealthy meals per week, things cooked where older folks cannot chew them well; they forget who needs things such as cutting up food and must be told daily; oddly sweet things such as french fries; foods are untasty or odd. Typically poor response from administrators although administration has changed hands multiple times. Waited for new owners to make a difference but things have gotten worse. Some of the staff there are very kind but not really as helpful as they could be due to being overwhelmed with residents. On plus side, they do have lots of activities which my loved one enjoys. Looking to move, unfortunately, and a difficult task for an older person to go through.

Inadequate Care

The initial evaluation was very incomplete and resulted in her being placed in a setting that was not appropriate for the need. She was nowhere near being served properly. They voluntarily moved her to the next level to the memory care area. (Interestingly, they didn't charge more.) The evaluator should have picked up on that so that we would have known what memory care entailed. In assisted living, they gave her a lavaliere to push for assistance. That was demanding on them because they had to physically come and turn the lavaliere off. In memory care, the residents no longer have a lavaliere to call for help. To be in a room and have to holler for help when you have memory problems is not feasible. She was admitted to the hospital three or four times during her stay due to falls. The ratio of adult to care giver was lower in memory care, but certainly not adequate to respond to the needs of the patients. When we moved in, all the right things were said, it was clean, I felt like things were being done well, but we didn't know to ask the key question, "What is the ratio of caregiver to patient?" Had we heard it was going to be 3:36, we would have reconsidered. It was a learning curve, and that is something key. Even when they moved her to the smaller memory care level, it was still a number of people per caregiver. I don't think her admission was malicious, but to not pick up on how much attention she needed made me feel like they just wanted to fill the bed.

Dissatisfied

My loved one was a resident at Brookside Stone Mountain and overall the experience was not great. Shortly after we moved our loved one into this facility, they terminated their management staff. From that point on, things went downhill. There was no continuity as far as help and the new management did not appear to have any interpersonal communication skills to connect like the previous management staff did. I felt as though there was always a conflict with the nurse on duty referenced by my loved one's medication and care. The staff relied on the hospice nurse and her staff to take care of my loved one's basic care. My loved one also complained that they were rough with him. We eventually had to move my loved one to another location after he had suffered two strokes during his stay at Brookstone.

Disappointed with management

I don't think that there are sufficient protocols or procedures in place to operate the facility efficiently and affectively. There appears to be sufficient staffing, but accountability seems to be lacking. To me it was totally disorganized and some of that was the result of pipes bursting, but I felt it was just sloppy management.

Not the right place!

I was not impressed with this community at all. The halls were small and dark and the community was dark as well. The residents were not really doing much in the community. This was just not a good fit for dad.

Mom is not longer living here!

Mom was in the memory care unit of this community. They have been making some renovations, however they could have done a better job of cleaning up after them. There was one caregiver there that seemed qualified to care for memory care residents. The rest of the staff did not seem to take the time to care for the residents. Mom did not receive her medication during the first day she was there. She ended up in the hospital due to dehydration and she was not receiving her oxygen daily.

Personal Care Home Nightmare

Overall experience was negative for my mom and our family. I would not recommend anyone to the facility. Market a service but don't follow through. Need to sell the property to someone who cares. High turnover in staff. Staff was overworked and under trained. No professionalism what so ever.

Deceptive advertising

Listed as assisted living in website and with commerce board of health! Now they claim they are not but a personal care home and as such do not provide services such as wound care which I was previously told they do provide! Hardly any food choices and food is not good! Services not provided in an expeditious manner! No activity staff or cook! Alway out of food like staples such as bread and milk! No professional oversight, not one person with a license! Why it’s listed everywhere as an assisted living and it’s not is very concerning! Staff are mostly nice and kind to residents but not always available if resident needs immediate care for urgent need like being soaking wet!

Would not recommend

We have gone through 3 administrators and my loved one has only been here for a couple of months. There is a lot of staffing turnover which is affecting the quality of care my loved one is receiving. I have reached out to them and have gotten no response. Due to our experience, I would not recommend them to other families looking.

Stay Away

My mom has been at Brookside Stone Mountain for 9 months and they've had three administrators with no experience, they're currently on the third. They lack staff; they have one person per shift on days, one person on evenings, and one person on nights. They lack experience in taking care of the residents. The only meal my mom can safely eat is breakfast. For the other meals, they serve food a teenager would eat. They aren't concerned about dietary needs or low sodium - they don't take that into consideration. I've never seen a dietician or a menu - you never know what you're going to eat. Like most communities, they have an "always available" menu that you can order from if you don't like what's being served that day, but my mom gets lip when she asks for it. They'll say things like, "what do you want that for?" They're also lacking in the cleaning of her room. Her room just got cleaned after 3 weeks. We're dealing with a culture that doesn't care, they don't have basic care skills. According to the State Ombudsman they are not an Assisted Living Facility, although they represent themselves as such. They are a personal care home. My mom has fell twice and SHE had to call 911. They don't answer the call buttons, they just shut them off and keep going. They don't answer the phone and the door stays unlocked until nighttime, you can just walk in and roam about inside. They open the door at 7am and they allow it to stay open until 7pm. Anyone could walk in off the streets. As a family we have had meetings with them. They seemed responsive to our concerns and small changes were made afterward. One of the directors tried to pull a surprise to have legal counsel there, and we didn't know he was going to be there. I'm pretty sure that precipitated the change in the administration, because of the things we shared with the legal counsel. Based on us speaking up there were small changes, but it's still not the experience we would like to have for our mom. It's been a bad experience. Currently, my mom doesn't get to the bed before 10:30pm and they get her up at 5:30am because of their lack of staff. So, she is not getting the proper rest. There isn't enough staff to get her to bed early and / or help her up at a decent time. They used to have 12 hour shifts, but they had problems keeping staff so now they have 8 hour shifts. The person who has the evening shift puts her to bed and the person who has the morning shift, gets her up - which results in the 10:30pm (or later) to 5:30am sleep schedule. The reason why we chose Brookside is because it fit into her budget, and it was all inclusive. I'm not and can not speak for all of communities, but for staying in the budget - is this what we get? She is 80+ years old, and this is ridiculous. Thankfully nothing has happened to my mom, there is no abuse or neglect. But the culture lacks respect, they talk to her any kind of way. They'll say things like, "If I would have known you were on my list, I wouldn't have helped you." They speak to her in an inhuman manner and they make her feel less than. Not all, but some of the staff have a serious lack of respect and if they're speaking to her that way, I can't imagine how they speak to those who are nonverbal and incognizant. We used A Place for Mom; they referred us to Brookside and I'm very disappointed in that service because now we are moving my mom. They've decided that as of Monday they are raising her rent by [price removed]. Overall I would tell everyone that it's been a bad experience and to stay away.
