Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

Concord, NH is a small New England town, set along the Merrimack River, with an abundance of history. It features many sites dedicated to notable residents, which include an astronaut and a U.S. president. But don’t let this capital city’s small size fool you: There’s something for everyone in Concord.

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is a museum for all ages, with interactive exhibits on astronomy, aviation, and earth and space science. Named for two New Hampshire natives — Christa McAuliffe, the Concord High School social studies teacher selected by NASA to be part of the Space Shuttle Challenger mission, and Alan Shepard, the first American to travel into space — the museum features a planetarium, an observatory, a U.S. Air Force jet, a full-size replica of a NASA rocket, a space shuttle simulator, science fiction memorabilia, and much more.

For those interested in earlier U.S. history, on the north end of town is Pierce Manse, the home of President Franklin Pierce. The New Hampshire State House, with its golden dome and opulent Greek Revival design of the early 1800s, sits on Main Street in the Downtown Concord Historic District. In this area you’ll find treasures such as the historic Granite State Candy Shoppe, the New Hampshire Historical Society, the Walker-Woodman House, the Eagle Hotel, and Phenix Hall, where Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt once spoke.

Concord also has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts and art lovers. Don’t miss the trails at White Park, the seasonal treats at Carter Hill Orchard, or the wildlife at the Susan N. McLane Audubon Center. Then catch a movie or stage production at the Red River Theater, the Capitol Center for the Arts, or the SNOB (Somewhat North of Boston) Film Festival.

Transportation

The Concord Area Transit (CAT) provides bus services throughout Concord and surrounding cities. CAT has a program called the Concord Senior Transit (CST), which is a bus line specifically for riders 60 years of age and older. CST buses are wheelchair accessible, can be scheduled by appointment, and can safety transport seniors to any appointments or activities.

Downtown Concord Historic District, which includes many of the city’s popular tourist sites, is compact enough to be easily traversable on foot. In 2010, Concord was named New Hampshire’s first “Bicycle Friendly Community” by the League of American Bicyclists. Visitors can also rent cars from major car rental companies or use ride-sharing apps.
