We had some issues with the cable that took about a month to be resolved. They said there was wifi but it was never strong enough to use in her room even though we were told it was going to be reworked, that never happened during the 8 months my mom was there. The room especially the bathroom was always clean but the faucet in her kitchenette area leaked and dripped. The staff was really great. They were friendly and treated my mom very well, it should be noted that someone from the family visited every day. However, they were often understaffed and Mom sometimes did not get baths on time. Despite that, they were very kind. If she did not come to meals, someone would check on her and bring her something if she wished. The meals were generally pretty good especially breakfast but there usually wasn't really a second choice offered at any meal. Breakfast was horribly early, had to be there before 8am. There wasn't anyone to run activities on the weekend so often it was up to the residents to run a exercise DVD or use puzzles or games left out for them in the activities area. Having said that the activities director tried very hard to include my mom in what was offered during the week. It was not the cheapest place but it was very comfortable and if all services had been offered as advertised it would have been a bargain, as it was we were satisfied.... Read more
SummerHouse Byrd Springs is a charming assisted living community where life is meant to be lived at your own pace. Located in the Tennessee River Valley, this community has played an important role in Huntsville’s senior living experiences for 20 years. Nicknamed Rocket City, the area is known for its remarkable contributions to science, technology, and U.S. space exploration. Huntsville is the site of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, and the United States Army Aviation and Missile Command. In addition, the town offers a comfortable suburban feel with access to a number of cozy coffee shops and parks.
This community offers a host of unique signature programs designed to celebrate residents’ individuality while fulfilling their mental, physical, and emotional health needs. Residents can stay active and connect with peers by joining a community club or program. The Vitality Club, for example, celebrates residents’ personalities and provides a range of daily activities to participate in. Through the Walking Trail program, residents have assistance in exploring the community and surrounding area safely. Or, the Second Wind Dreams program is aimed at fulfilling residents’ aspirations and turning them into reality!

We have had multiple issues with my mom needing help and waiting over an hour or multiple hours for assistance. Food listed on menu and items that are supposed to always be available are often not available or at least servers tell that to residents. Medications poorly managed. I think that they are going through a transition phase and trying to improve but our experience has been lack luster at best. Smell of urine often appears in back hallway.

SummerHouse is going through a transition to new ownership but seem to be handling it pretty well. Be sure to stay in touch with the staff to know what's going on with your loved one. The staff have always been very friendly and helpful when I have questions or requests. And the other residents are really friendly as well. I'm glad to have that for my dad, who really needed to be around another people. They go on a variety of different outings - to Walmart once a month, to thrift stores. They went to a play rehearsal at reduced ticket price, and they go out to lunch. On-site at SummerHouse, they have activities like karaoke, bingo, cooking classes, gardening classes, movie nights. I like that they have an enclosed courtyard, so you don't have to worry about people who don't have any business being in the facility coming around and taking advantage of your loved one. They also have a screened in sunroom so you don't get attacked by mosquitos. l also like that they have meetings with the residents once a month to discuss things and get resident input. Some communities have pullcords in the rooms, but I prefer SummerHouse's pendant system, where residents wear a pendant and can therefore call for help anywhere within the facility, and not just in their room. It has been an adjustment for my dad going from living on his own with complete autonomy to now living in assisted living with someone else deciding when it's time to take medications or have meals and things like that, but it has been a positive change overall.

I was going to put my loved one here but unfortunately they did not pass the cognitive test. I really liked the facility, it was very nice and I liked the layout. The only downfall was on one side of the building all of the rooms face a brick building, so when you look out the window that is all you see and that's where my loved ones room was going to be.
We expected more activities and the calendar looks good but things frequently don't happen. There is no one on the weekend to run activities so those on the schedule are just suggestions. We expected that Mom would have scheduled showers and that someone would come every morning and night to help with dressing but she is expected to press her call button to request assistance which we have had a hard time getting Mom to do as she doesn't want to "bother" anyone. It's important to have someone visit often because it seems like you can't trust that services will be provided as promised. It took about a month to get the cable TV working and the wifi is still not good 2 months later. Having said that, the staff are very friendly and kind. I think that like many places, they are struggling to get adequate staffing so that might explain the shortcomings.

They changed ownership while my mother was here and during the transition the quality of went downhill a little bit. The response time was a little slower and the food service was not as good. Prior to the changeover, the food would have been a 5. [name removed] the director wonderful. My mother really loved the church services that were provided, but she did not get involved in many other physical activities.

This was a very nice community, they just would not take anyone who had thickened liquids so he was not able to be accepted there.
For the most part it has been a good experience. There have been a few things we had issue with, but that wasn't because of the facility per se. I liked how they worked really closely with us and helped us with the transition. And cleanliness has been very good as well.

I am a recent resident at Elmcroft. I came to stay a short time but I am still here for 4 months. I really am happy here. The staff are wonderful. The will help you with anything you need. They always are smiling and happy to help. The kitchen staff are great as well. The food is very tasty and plenty of it. The building is very clean. I first noticed that there is no odor. After moving I found out why. There is cleaning all day ,e ery day. Each residents took us cleaned weekly. Trash is taken out 3 times a day. The management staff is always available to talk anytime. When they you are home, they are correct. You will know you are home only better!

I was very impressed with our initial visit. I chose for my mother as though for myself. Soon learned there were many leaving including staff. Food was not good. New changes in food director. Recommend a family member eat with your love bed one. New Director is arriving. Love to see focus on clients. Often no activities due to that person must drive bus to doctor appointments. Need more staff and a second activities leader.

My mother was a resident at Elmcroft for about a year. We loved the location and the facility was easy to navigate. I especially enjoyed the security offered by the locked doors. The decor is nice, food was great and the new activities coordinator is really trying to offer fun activities for the residents. I would caution anyone looking for a place for their loved one to remember that all facilities are on their best behavior when you visit. This is not my first experience with senior living services. Be sure to read the fine print and ask lots of questions up front. Elmcroft is a great facility, however, they are severely understaffed. Those on duty are multi-tasking and just trying to hold it all together and provide for the needs of the residents. I was in the dining facility one day on a weekend where lunch was served to my mother's table 45 minutes late because they just couldn't physically bring out the food fast enough due to only 2 staff members serving. I liked the direct service staff-RA's and nurses. Leadership for this facility needs to either hire more employees or engage in the direct services. Maintenance issues were slow to be resolved as well.

I was very impressed with this facility. The building is very well maintained and the locked entrance gave me a good feeling about security. The facility was clean, easy to navigate and all staff encountered were friendly. The residents looked happy as well. I hope my loved one chooses this place for his next home.

My mother lives here and the staff is so attentive. She has had a couple of falls and they called me right away and let me know. Everyone is so friendly and they make you feel welcome. She likes the meals and enjoys them. They are having a family dinner next week. I chose Elmcroft because we were looking for a nice community and it's within walking distance of my house.

My parents moved here recently and they are still adjusting. I think it's a safe place and the staff is very accommodating. They are slowly getting involved in activities while becoming more accustomed to their new surroundings.I chose this community because I liked the staff and the layout of the place. They were able to get a 3 room apartment here.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score.
