We felt a vibe when we first walked into Harvard Square Retirement and Senior Living. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The place is so very clean. My mom gets her apartment cleaned once a week and her laundry as well. They don't hesitate to contact me with anything. They keep me informed. There are staff at the front desk 24/7. The front door is locked at a certain time, but they will let you in. Their meals are wonderful. You have two entrees at lunch and dinner, but if none of those look good to you they have an anytime menu that you can choose from. The portions are geared for the elderly, so they are just right. I've eaten there a few times with my mom and everyone is accommodating and very friendly. It's very affordable, as well. It was way too expensive in Littleton, so we had to go elsewhere. It only takes me 30 minutes to get there. I'm so impressed with Harvard Square and would highly recommend the facility to others.... Read more

Harvard Square was definitely not a fit. The interior was very outdated and noisy. The memory care unit was in a separate building and was a very "cold" environment. Everything was drab and dark inside. My two siblings and I could not wait to get out of there. I don't normally give poor reviews on places but, honestly, I would not recommend that facility to anyone.
1. Our overall experience with the guy we first met( sorry can't remember his name)was great. He was pleasant and I felt like he was very sincere. Shortly after we met the nurse, who had questions about mom and how she was doing in her medication and I feel like she was OK too. After that it kind of went downhill because I feel like the only thing they were interested in was getting the money. Every single day she ask me to sign the papers and write a check. 2. And for the most part, my mothers apartment was clean and I truly believe that's because I was there every single day making sure mom had everything she needed. Not one time. Did I see anyone come in and clean up or even help clean up my mom's place. I guess the facility was up to par although it did have a distinct odor but I guess when you're working with insufficient staff members it's gonna smell less than great. 3. I have no complaints about the staff members there. They were very nice and friendly. 4. The quality of care they gave my mother was less than adequate. My mother would frequently ring the nurses bell, and no one would answer, due to lack of staff. My mother would frequently call me at night telling me no one is answering her call bell, and she has to go to the bathroom. I frequently had to go over there and help my mother which I felt was totally absurd. It became so bad that my mother became depressed and had a failure to thrive. I stayed there every single night to help her until mom transitioned and we put her back in the hospice. Had I known the care there was so poor I would never have put my mother in a place like that. It may be good for some people, but it was not good for me and my family. Guess the activities were good. Never really got to enjoy them. 7. Extremely over priced for the care she received, considering my daughter and myself were the ones taking care of her. Changing her bed, getting her to the bathroom, bathing her and making sure she ate. Had I known the poor quality of care offered, I would have never ever put her in there. I blame myself everyday for putting my mom in that place. I realize she was 103 years old but she did much better in her own place and she was happy. Even though we had to travel a little to take care of her she thrived because the quality of care was good and she felt good. The quality of care at Harvard was less then adequate for her and she passed within 2 months. On a scale from 1-5 , they would get a 1 from me. Like I said, I felt they gave less than adequate care to my mother. When you place a parent or anyone in a facility that has promised to help take care of them, that's what should happen. Unfortunately that is not what happened and I was extremely disappointed. My rating for this facility is that it is below average and I would not recommend it to anyone.

They offer activities, but mom didn't participate. Housekeeping was good and community was clean. My only issue was we had to move mom out because they didn't have the level of care that she needed after she fell. That was my fault because I didn't ask the right questions up front. Cost was reasonable.

Response from Harvard Square by Cogir

We had a nice tour, but I thought the facility was just okay. They were halfway through renovations, so there were two starkly different areas. The updated communal space was nice. The dining room had a spectacular view and seemed like lodge/resort living. Everything is centered around that space. But the rest of it is pretty institutional. It felt old and dated. I got to see some finished rooms, and it still just seemed old.

Not impressed. Fairly clean. Needed updating. Wasn't a comfortable environment.

We chose Harvard Square because of the location and when we were down here touring it just felt like the right fit. The food is really good, the chef met with my mom the first day and wanted to make sure she was happy. I have had a hard time getting a hold of the gal in charge of medical care so I think we need to figure out a way that communication can work better for the both of us. I would definitely recommend the facility, it is very nice. I really like that they integrate assisted living and independent living residents so my mom is able to have more interaction.

I would refer people to this community. The only complaint that we have is that my loved one stated that she is interrupted a lot. I appreciated it because it prompts my loved one to go down and get something to eat but at the same time I'm uneasy with everyone having a key to her room, but I understand the safety. We had some issues with the maintenance person having the cable set up. Other than this things have been great. Everything here is great. The food is good and the people are friendly and really clean.

The community was accommodating and were willing to work with me on pricing. However, the pricing was still too high.

Our tour at Harvard Square was great. Really the only issue for my loved one was they do not allow alcoholic beverages. But I was so impressed with them.

My Uncle has been a resident for over 4 years now. They help me take very good care of him. If I have ever had a concern they seem to make sure that we address it. The staff is pleasant and very caring for the residents. I want to thank [name removed] and her staff. They have always exceeded my expectations.

This location was not good, it is in the center of the city and just had too much going on.

I liked this community but the apartments were a lot smaller and they did not have as much open space for my dogs to have an area.
Harvard Square was an amazing place, our loved one stay was much shorter then anticipated but the staff and their care was wonderful. Everyone was marvelous, remarkable and just went above and beyond for our family. Even when we were waiting for our tour to start other residents and their families came up to us to say how happy they were to of found this place, which was amazing to us. We loved Harvard Square.

[Name removed], who showed us around the facility, was just wonderful. He sat down with us and had a very lovely, long conversation about mom’s needs and how he could help. He took us on a walk around the facility, and we got to see the size of the rooms and what have you. While we were there, we came across a whole group of women who lived there who were singing together, which we were just tickled to see. There was nothing at all that we had any issue with here.
We looked at quite a few and chose Harvard Square because she wanted a big 1 bedroom and it had a nook so she could take more of her furniture so she did not feel like she was downsizing too much. She loves the food, they are chef prepared and they have menu to choose from. The value for the money is great and I like the overall complex because it is not too big. They offer just enough for what she was looking for and we would recommend to others looking.

This community is a great facility and it is a little more expensive. I would have picked this community if the whole family could have gotten there.
I would tell others to watch out for them to increase the prices. That happened to us within the first two weeks of being here. Also for a full service place, they were not able to meet the needs of my mother who had Alzheimers which should not have been a big deal for them. I would not recommend to others who are looking.

Our tour at Harvard Square was fine. It was a relatively old property, but I was very impressed with the person who handled the memory care section. She seemed very compassionate. I do know that the state cited them for how they were handling Covid issues, so that was a deterrent to us.
