Age-Qualified Vacations Are on the Rise

You don’t have to be retired to prefer spending time with people who share your interests. Age-qualified communities, resorts and vacations for adults who are 55 or older are becoming more popular than ever.

Many adults in this demographic simply want to relax without having to worry about college students or young families. You’ve already lived that life, it is time to enjoy some well-deserved relaxation and rest.

Types of Age-Qualified Vacations

According to an AARP research study, 99% of boomers took “at least one leisure trip in 2017, with an average of five or more trips expected throughout the year.” With boomers traveling more and more, is it any wonder that age-qualified vacations are becoming increasingly popular?

The over 55 trend is all about catering to the means of retired people and why not? After all, U.S. News reports that baby boomers control 70% of America’s disposable income.

As a result, senior living communities aren’t the only ones focusing on creating exclusive and luxurious age-qualified options. The tourist industry here in America and beyond is also cashing in on the wealth of boomers with affordable, clean and luxurious vacations geared to an older crowd.

This is good news for boomers. Regardless of your preferred vacation, there is almost certainly an over 55 option for you:

1. Caribbean Getaway

RVing isn’t for everyone. If beautiful weather and luxury living are your preference, then these all-inclusive Caribbean vacations may be just what you’re after. These resorts offer everything you could want from a Caribbean getaway without rowdy students or young families. Best of all, you can meet other boomers who have the same interests and share similar values.

2. Cruises

Cruises have long been a staple of retirement (even a right of passage for older Americans). There is no shortage of age-qualified cruises available, but take the time to ask families and friends for their recommendations. You should also read online reviews and consider talking to your travel agent before booking.

3. Guided Tours

Want a taste of culture as well as an opportunity to relax in the lap of luxury? Then guided senior tours may be for you. There are a number of companies who offer senior tours so it is best to ask around for recommendations or talk to your travel agent to find a reputable tour company. Tours aimed at boomers often take you to some of Europe’s best cities, but if you are the adventurous type then they will also offer trips to Asia, South America and beyond!

4. RV Camping

Go Camping America provides a list of some of the best over 55 RV camping sites available across the country. With a little bit of planning, you could easily make it from coast to coast staying almost exclusively in senior-specific RV campgrounds.

Over 55 campgrounds often offer better activities and amenities that cater specifically to older adults (like golf) and a more relaxing atmosphere. Like the RV lifestyle itself, 55+ campgrounds combine nature with luxury, allowing you to experience the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort.

Questions About Age-Qualified Resorts

Some common questions that people have before visiting a 55+ resort include:

Are they accessible?

Again, call the resort to confirm, but most resorts catering to an older demographic know that as we age, medical and mobility issues become a growing concern. Most are equipped with elevators, handrails and ramps and are usually able and happy to accommodate.

Are they safe?

Safety always depends on the location or resort itself, but the best over 55 resorts know that seniors value safety and are usually better equipped with emergency response systems and security features.

What if your partner is under 55?

You should always double check beforehand, but in most cases, the resort will be happy to accommodate a couple who are different ages, as long as one of the partners is 55 or older.

If you’re over 55 and looking for a vacation that’s tailored to your interests and needs, then consider looking for options that are age-qualified. With a variety of choices – from cruising to RVing, you’ll find the benefits and variety plentiful.
