Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer organized living communities and aid to persons who may need a helping hand with things such as taking medication or showering. Assisted living communities frequently provide supervision of care, opportunities for social activity, and assistance with transit and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, Alzheimer’s care, or skilled nursing. Wisconsin maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) governs this community type. Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. These include: challenging behaviors, needs assessment of prospective residents, development of service plans, and medication management. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, and these meals must meet residents special dietary needs. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident-specific services, activity programming for persons with dementia, transportation, and independent living skills. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, and the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided.
