Assisted living communities provide recreational activities, healthcare, and supervision to individuals around 65 years of age or older. The services provided often include aid with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In some situations, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, respite, or hospice. Wisconsin maintains specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) governs this community type. Staff must receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include reporting abuse, development of service plans, provision of personal care, and standard precautions. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include health monitoring, leisure time activities, including personal care, and supervision. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, and community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, and therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled.
