Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers care, support, and assistance to self-sufficient individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing support. The services offered often include assistance with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In certain cases, communities may offer respite, hospice, or skilled nursing. The state of Wisconsin has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) certifies this type of community. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include needs assessment of prospective residents, resident rights, medication management, and development of service plans. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision, including personal care, transportation, and behavior management. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, and therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician.
