Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides care, aid, and supervision to independent seniors who do not need skilled nursing support. The services provided often include aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, continuing care, or respite. Wisconsin maintains specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) supervises this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include independent living skills, resident-specific services, information and referral, and behavior management. Staff members obtain education in a number of areas. These areas include provision of personal care, job responsibilities, first-aid, and standard precautions. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, and reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, and therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, and when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose.
