Assisted living communities arrange residential communities and aid to persons who may need help with things such as dressing or taking medication. Assisted living communities usually offer outings for social activity, assistance with appointments and transit, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, hospice, or respite. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) certifies this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care, level of personal care needs, activities and service preferences, and preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include resident self-administration of medication, medication administration, and residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These include: HIV/AIDS, orientation (2 hours), nurse delegation and core diabetes, and continuing education. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, communities choose to provide certain health support services, general responsibility for each resident, and assistance with ADLs. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room.
