Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer recreational activities, supervision, and personal care to people around 65 years of age or older. The services offered often involve help with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select cases, communities may provide hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. The state of Texas has specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities regulates this type of community. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive assessment , interviews, and home visits, and must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self-administer their own medication, reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, and assisting residents with taking medications. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These include: resident assessment, basic emergency first-aid, financial management, and resident characteristics (including dementia). This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, and The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, activity and/or social program for residents, personal care, and general supervision or oversight.
