Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and health care for your loved one who require a helping hand with dressing or preparing meals. Assisted living communities commonly offer assistance with appointments and transit, help with the activities of daily life, and chances for leisurely activity. In some situations, communities may offer “aging in place”, nursing care, or dementia care. The state of Texas maintains specific rules associated with this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities supervises this community type. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive assessment , must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and interviews, and home visits. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics, financial management, resident and provider rights and responsibilities, and federal laws. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, and residents may self-administer their own medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, and communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision or direct administration of medications, assistance with activities of daily living, general supervision or oversight, and activity and/or social program for residents.
