Assisted living communities offer healthcare, supervision, and social interaction to people around 65 years old. The types of service provided often involve aid with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, skilled nursing care, or hospice. Tennessee maintains specific rules associated with this type of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, part-time intermittent nursing care, personal services such as protective care, and dietary services. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self-administer medication, reminding residents to take their medications, and assistance with reading labels. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards, No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals, the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, and must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as recreational and social activities, physical assessment, arrangements for visits by or to health care providers, and assistance with health services. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. Staff members receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include fire safety disaster preparedness, nutrition, financial management, and food service.
