Assisted living communities offer organized living communities and aid for people who need a helping hand with things such as washing or dressing. The services provided often include aid with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing, respite, or “aging in place”. Tennessee has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities certifies this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals, must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request, and must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include the ability and readiness to intervene if crises arise, personal services such as protective care, part-time intermittent nursing care, and responsibility for the safety of the resident when in the community. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing the resident while taking medication, residents may self-administer medication, and opening dosage packaging. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program. Staff members receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include healthy lifestyles, nutrition, fire safety disaster preparedness, and applicable state rules and regulations. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with health services, physical assessment, recreational and social activities, and arrangements for visits by or to health care providers.
