Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer oversight, social events, and personal care to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually offer assistance with the activities of daily life, aid with transit and appointments, and chances for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing, “aging in place”, or respite. The state of Tennessee maintains specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing the resident while taking medication, residents may self-administer medication, and opening dosage packaging. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include responsibility for the safety of the resident when in the community, laundry services, assistance with activities of daily living, and medication administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as arrangements for visits by or to health care providers, assistance with health services, physical assessment, and recreational and social activities. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request, the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards, and No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals. Staff are required to receive education in a number of areas. These include: applicable state rules and regulations, health care management, food service, and healthy lifestyles. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room.
