Assisted living communities provide residential communities and assistance to your loved one who may require a helping hand with things such as washing or cooking meals. The types of service provided often include support with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. In some situations, communities may provide hospice, continuing care, or nursing. South Carolina has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing licenses this community type. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of fields. These include: Confidentiality of resident information and records and review of the Bill of Rights for Long-Term Care communities., procedures for checking and recording vital signs, emergency procedures, and use of restraints . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor blood sugar levels, administer routine medications, and staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 3 residents to a room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication assistance, at least one structured recreation activity each day, transportation, and assistance with ADLs. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers, recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being, assistance with ADLs for the resident, and assessing the extent of residents problems and needs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs and three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs.
