Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which offers care, assistance, and support to healthy individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Services offered often involve help with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, dementia care, or respite. South Carolina has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing certifies this community type. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These include: medication management including storage, administration, receiving orders, securing medications, interactions, and adverse reactions., use of restraints , Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for designated staff members/volunteers to ensure that there is a certified staff member/volunteer present whenever residents are in the community, and procedures for checking and recording vital signs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs and special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs . This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with ADLs, at least one structured recreation activity each day, medication assistance, and transportation. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 3 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with ADLs for the resident, assessing the extent of residents problems and needs, recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being, and dietary needs. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor blood sugar levels, administer routine medications, and staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision.
