Assisted living communities provide residential communities and aid for people who might require support with things such as cooking meals or showering. Assisted living communities commonly provide care supervision, assistance with the activities of daily life, and assistance with transit and appointments. In certain cases, communities may provide continuing care, hospice, or skilled nursing. The state of South Carolina has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing regulates this community type. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These include: Basic first-aid, Care of persons specific to the physical/mental condition being cared for in the community, medication management including storage, administration, receiving orders, securing medications, interactions, and adverse reactions., and occupational safety and health administration standards regarding blood-borne pathogens. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers, recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being, dietary needs, and assessing the extent of residents problems and needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer routine medications, staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, and monitor blood sugar levels. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, medication assistance, at least one structured recreation activity each day, and assistance with ADLs. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs and three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 3 residents per room.
