Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers supervision, assistance, and support to medically stable seniors who do not need skilled nursing care. The services offered often include assistance with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, respite, or “aging in place”. In Pennsylvania, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $40,020 . Pennsylvania has specific rules associated with this type of community. Department of Human Services, Bureau of Human Services Licensing certifies this community type. Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. These include: abuse and reporting requirements, residents’ rights, fire safety, and infection control. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include housekeeping, laundry services, 24-hour supervision, and assistance with unanticipated ADLs for a defined recovery period. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must meet recommended dietary allowances established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and must provide three meals a day.
