An assisted living community is a residential community which provides support, supervision, and care to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing support. The services provided often involve support with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, dementia care, or continuing care. The state of Ohio has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health licenses this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These include: community procedures, job responsibilities, securing emergency assistance, and residents rights. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as psychical history, health history, cognitive status review, and medication review. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medication, intermittent nursing services, activities, and personal care. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare.
