Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide oversight, social events, and personal care to people who are around 65 years old. Assisted living communities often provide opportunities for organized activity, help with appointments and transportation, and support with the activities of daily life. In select situations, communities may provide dementia care, “aging in place”, or respite. Ohio has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. Ohio Department of Health licenses this type of community. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include intermittent nursing services, medication administration, personal care, and assistance with self-administration of medication. Staff must obtain education in a variety of subjects. These include: job responsibilities, securing emergency assistance, residents rights, and community procedures. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include handing medications to resident, assistance opening and taking medication, and assistance organizing medication. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical diagnoses, functional status assessment, psychological history, and cognitive status review.
