Assisted living communities provide apartment-style housing and social interaction as well as individualized help. Assisted living communities often offer supervision of care, aid with appointments and transit, and chances for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, respite, or hospice. The state of Ohio has specific regulations associated with this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health certifies this type of community. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medication, intermittent nursing services, personal care, and medication administration. Staff members receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include securing emergency assistance, job responsibilities, community procedures, and residents rights. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as cognitive status review, health history, psychological history, and medical diagnoses. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include handing medications to resident, reminders, and verifying labels.
