Assisted living communities provide recreational activities, oversight, and personal care to persons who are about 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities commonly offer opportunities for organized activity, aid with appointments and transportation, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, continuing care, or respite. The state of Ohio maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health licenses this type of community. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of areas. These include: residents rights, securing emergency assistance, community procedures, and job responsibilities. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medication, personal care, intermittent nursing services, and medication administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as health history, psychical history, medical diagnoses, and psychological history. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include handing medications to resident, assistance opening and taking medication, and assistance organizing medication.
